Dear Colleagues and friends,
The theme for International Women’s Day, 8 March 2022 (IWD 2022) is, “Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow”, recognizing the contribution of women and girls around the world, who are leading the charge on climate change adaptation, mitigation, and response, to build a more sustainable future for all (International Women’s Day 2022: “Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow” | UN Women – Headquarters)
As your UNFSU Executive Team, we have made it a point of duty to recognize the contribution of our women around the world and especially on this annual event.
Today as we commentate this day, we look back at the challenges of the last year and how the world moved so quickly from one crisis, the pandemic to the another, the Ukrainian war.
It is sad to see that as we struggle to see gender equality, which is the bedrock for attaining sustainable development, that yet again resources, which should have been allocated to this noble cause are once again being wasted in vain.
The ongoing war will cause countless untold casualties and the vulnerable, mostly the elderly, women and children will be the ones to suffer the most.
We cannot achieve sustainable development without peace.
As you commemorate this day, we encourage you to do what you can to support the peace process and to support women in their efforts to strive for sustainable tomorrow, without wars.
Once again, we turn to our UN women in the field, and we take this opportunity to salute you and to thank you for all your strength in adversity.
Thank you for being dignified women colleagues, who push through no matter the obstacles and crisis.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all women as we celebrate International Women Day’s.
